'View Down The Highest Raglan Castle tower' by Marijn Kampf
Castles usually would have a moat, which is a water filled trench dug around the castle and a portcullis which is a fence made of iron that comes before the gate and can be lowered up and down.
Another defence are the walls and towers which keep out the enemies and their weapons. The towers have small holes, which are called loopholes, that slant inwards so that enemy archers can't shoot inside, but archers inside the castle can shoot out. The towers also help see the enemies aproaching so that you can get ready and defend the Castle. Castles are usually located on easy to defend spots like with three sides bordering a lake or river. Some are also built in mountains or hills so you have a good view of the surrounding landscape. There are also some located on islands and in the middle of lakes. Some castles that were built next to tree's would chop down the tree's which were inside about a 2 mile diameter of the castle, so that they could see the enemy approaching.
